A
little more than a century ago the Order of the Holy Cross began
to dream of building a new and permanent home, a dream that was
to become reality in West Park.
The
corner stone for what is now the Guest House was laid in 1902. The
building was the first monastery built for an Anglican order since
the reign of Henry VIII.
The
design was by noted architect Henry Vaughn, famous for his English
Gothic style buildings. But Vaughn chose a charming variation on
a Dutch Colonial style that he thought was appropriate because of
the rich history of Dutch Colonial style buildings in the Hudson
Valley.
As
impressive as the building is today, it is an even more startling
expression of optimism when you consider that the Order consisted
of only a few men, was only a few decades old, had no substantial
financial backing, and few examples of other Anglican orders to
look to.
Here
is what the order wrote in The Holy Cross Magazine at the time.
