Laying of the Corner Stone

July 1902

The corner-stone of Holy Cross Minster was laid on Tuesday, June 17. The rain of the night before had washed the air clear of mist and smoke, and brought a delightful coolness after the heat. The day was perfect for an out-door function. A few friends gathered to share our joy. First came the blessing of the Gate-house, the procession starting from the Oratory,Holy Cross Monastery under construction and passing through the different rooms of the house. Then the Altar in the Oratory was blessed and the Holy Sacrifice offered there, and then all again took their place in line and went to the site of the new building and the corner-stone was blessed and set in its place. We left the Gate-house a little after noon. The sun had been very bright all the morning, but just as we came out of the house, a cloud, the thinnest of veils, was drawn across the sky above us, not enough to cast a shadow, but, while leaving the distant prospects in full light, tempered the glow on the fields and woods about us, bringing a sense of quietness and peace. May the Minster now begun be indeed a house of prayer through coming generations, and find within it some faithful hearts watching and waiting when the Lord shall come again.

The Father Superior expects to be in New York about July 10th and again at the end of July or the beginning of August.

The Building Fund now amounts to $16,442.00, $1,140.00 having been given in since our report last month.

A large number of subscribers at this season are asking to have their addresses changed. Many do not state whether the address is permanent or temporary, in which case, of course, it is made permanent. Any who have failed in the first instance to be explicit can have the correction made by sending us a postal. It is impossible to guarantee such changes being made without delay unless the old address is given as well as the new, and all requests should be received not later than the 15th of each month.
