Prayers for Requiem in a time of Terrorism

Father of all compassion, we pray through your Son who died for us in the power of your Spirit of consolation saying: Lord in your mercy;
Hear our prayer.

We remember before you today all who died in the terror in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania; that you will grant them peace with all your saints; Lord in your mercy,
Hear our prayer.

We remember before you those who died in self-forgetful service, the police, firefighters and emergency personnel; that their sacrifice and heroism may be honored and imitated; Lord in your mercy,
Hear our prayer.

We remember before you all who mourn, especially for those who continue to live with uncertainty and those who will not recover the remains of those whom they love; Lord in your mercy,
Hear our prayer.

We remember before you those who hate us and who died in their hate; and that they may receive mercy and that their hate may not beget hatred in return; Lord in your mercy,
Hear our prayer.

We remember before you the people of this nation in their grief and fear and we pray that, trusting in you, they may be given the courage to rebuild their lives with hope and with a renewed commitment to justice and community; Lord in your mercy,
Hear our prayer.

We remember before you the leaders of this nation and the leaders of all nations, that you may grant them prudence, wisdom and the desire to seek justice, peace and an end to terror rather than prideful revenge; Lord in your mercy,
Hear our prayer.

Make us deeply aware of the shortness and uncertainty of human life; preserve us from sudden death and give us the grace to live each day as though it were our last; Lord in your mercy,
Hear our prayer.

Into your hands, O merciful Savior, we commend our brothers and sisters who died in terror. Acknowledge, we humbly pray you, sheep of your own fold, lambs of your own flock, sinners of your own redeeming. Receive them into the arms of your mercy, into the blessed rest of everlasting in peace, and into the glorious company of the saints in light.  Amen.
